How Does Google Work?

To put it simply, Google (and other search engines) are like giant libraries. Their job is to crawl and index all the websites on the internet and make them accessible to users who are looking for specific information. 

In order to do that, Google uses a complex algorithm to determine which websites should be displayed on the first page of the search results. This algorithm takes into account a variety of factors, including the website’s content, structure, design and user experience.

Crawling

In order to index all the websites on the internet, Google uses a process called crawling. Crawling is when Google sends out little spider bots (hence, crawling) to scour the internet and collect information about all the websites they can find. 

Google sends these bots to a web page or web post to read the content on that page. Whether it’s a text, image, video, PDF or any other format, this content is discovered via links.

The bot follows every link on a website until it has visited each and every one of them. This process is what allows Google to index billions of pages every day and make them available to users within milliseconds. 

To that end, a good first step to getting your SaaS website to appear on Google Search is to build a sound XML sitemap that will provide links to every page on your site, so that when you create a new page, you can easily create an internal link from a related existing page on your site and send a signal to Google bots that they should crawl it.

The next step is to sign up for a Google Search Console account. This free tool allows you to invite Google bots to crawl your newly developed page. You can do this by inspecting your new URL in the top search bar.

Then click “test live URL.”

When everything is good to go, finish by clicking “request indexing.”

Google Search Console also allows you to see more SaaS marketing SEO data on the pages Google has crawled, as well as to detect any crawling errors that may have occurred.

A few issues that might cause Google bots not to crawl a page include:

  • The site is not mobile-friendly
  • Complex coding language
  • Slow page speed
  • The page uses JavaScript to render content
  • Meta tags are set to noindex, nofollow
  • The page is blocked by a robots.txt file
  • The page is password-protected
  • The page doesn’t exist (404 error)
  • Poor navigation structure
  • Redirect loop
  • Server errors

Indexing

After a page has been crawled, Google will index the content on that page to make it available in the search results. 

This process happens almost instantaneously after a page is crawled. If there are any issues with the crawling or indexing of a page, however, it can take days or even weeks for the content to become available in the search results unless you fix the page and request for indexing again. 

You can also use Google Search Console to check if your pages have been indexed. To do this, simply go to “index,” then choose “coverage”.

Click “excluded.”

Then click “discovered – currently not indexed.”

You can then ask Google to recrawl your URL by following the steps we mentioned above in the Crawling section.

Ranking

Now that your website’s pages have been crawled and indexed, it’s time for you to optimize SEO for your SaaS company and gain a higher ranking in the Google Search results. 

The position of your website is determined by 200 ranking factors, including the quality and relevancy of the content on your web pages, your website usability, the number and quality of backlinks, keywords and context, as well as your website’s age, design, structure and user experience.
